Thunderstorms flood parts of Metro Manila, destroy a makeshift bridge in QC

Heavy rain brought by localized thunderstorms caused flooding in some parts of Metro Manila on Wednesday, according to Mariz Umali’s report on 24 Oras.

It also destroyed a makeshift bridge put up by residents in Barangay Bagong Silangan in Quezon City.

The residents said this is one of their major problems in the area since despite the light rains, the trash-laden water flows from Rizal, which makes it hard for them to cross.

In other parts of Metro Manila, floodwaters rose rapidly due to the sudden downpour of heavy rain this afternoon. The floods reached gutter depth in some parts of Aurora Boulevard in Cubao at around 3 in the afternoon.

Motorcycle riders on Commonwealth Avenue sheltered under the flyovers that are being converted into MRT stations. Several individuals were also stranded.

“Pahirapan po talagang sumakay lalo na kapag tag-ulan traffic po banda sa Roxas Boulevard,” said a student.

(It’s really hard to find a ride, especially during the rainy season since there’s also traffic along Roxas Boulevard.)

State weather bureau PAGASA said the localized thunderstorms caused the sudden rainfall in Metro Manila as well as in other parts of the country.

Meanwhile, the trough of a low-pressure area also brought rain showers to northern and central Luzon.

Since rainy days are said to be more frequent, the MMDA is constantly monitoring the trash traps that they have built in the waterways.

It is said to have installed 191 trash traps in waterways throughout Metro Manila.

“Kasi pag napunta ang mga basura sa mga pumping station masisira ang mga pumping at di na makabomba ng tubig baha. Natural magbabaha po tayo kaya pakiusap disiplina ‘wag magtapon ng basura para ‘di tayo bumaha,” said MMDA District Operations engineer Alexander Mohammad. — Sherylin Untalan/BM, GMA Integrated News
