Murder complaint filed vs Makati road rage suspect —police

A murder complaint was filed Friday against the suspect in the fatal shooting of a motorist on EDSA-Ayala Tunnel in Makati City, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) said.

NCRPO spokesperson Police Lieutenant Colonel Eunice Salas told GMA News Online that the inquest proceedings against suspect Gerrard Yu was undertaken by a Makati City prosecutor at 10 a.m.

“The NCRPO through the Makati City Police Station has filed murder charges against Gerrard Raymund Talusan Yu, the suspect in the fatal road rage shooting that occurred near the Ayala Southbound Tunnel in Makati City on May 28, 2024,” she said in a message.

The complaint has been submitted for resolution as the suspect waived his right to a preliminary investigation.

Asked if he is denying that he was the one who shot the victim, Yu told reporters to just ask his lawyer as he appealed to the media and public not to judge him, saying he is a good person.

“Si Attorney na lang po. Pasensya na po kayo (Just ask Attorney. Sorry),” he said in a video posted by Super Radyo dzBB’s Nimfa Ravelo on X (formerly Twitter).

“Nakikiusap ako para sa media, mabuti po tayong tao, hindi po tayo masama. So nakikiusap lang po ako sa mga tao, huwag naman husgahan tayo,” he added.

(I am pleading to the media, I am a good person, I am not bad. So I'm just appealing to the public, please don't judge me.)

On Thursday, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) said it has suspended Yu's driver's license.

LTO chief Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II said driver’s license cancellation is the maximum penalty for Yu’s administrative cases for reckless driving and being an improper person to operate the vehicle.

“We already issued a Show Cause Order against him and since he is already under police custody for a case that is non-bailable, he was directed to submit a notarized affidavit on why he should not be penalized,” Mendoza said.

On Tuesday, a 65-year-old male family driver died after Yu allegedly shot him following an altercation on the tunnel. The victim was with a house helper and a seven-year-old child who witnessed the crime.

Authorities on Wednesday arrested the alleged gunman at his house in Pasig City.

One of the guns registered to the suspect was “confirmed through firearms crossmatching to be the one used in the shooting,” according to the NCRPO.

The paraffin test conducted on Yu yielded a positive result and the black vehicle used during the crime was also found and confiscated in his house, the police added.—Joviland Rita/AOL, GMA Integrated News
