Elderly bicycle-rider in QC run over by armored van, dies

An elderly bicycle-rider succumbed to injuries Tuesday after he was run over by an armored vehicle along A. Bonifacio Avenue, Quezon City.

According to Marisol Abduhraman's report on 24 Oras, the victim was turning from 7th Avenue to A. Bonifacio when the mishap occurred.

Based on the CCTV footage from the Quezon City Police District, the armored car was also turning left at the time.

"Pagdating po sa gitna, papuntang A. Bonifacio, doon po nabangga nu'ng armored [car] 'yung bicycle rider," Traffic Sector 1 Commander Captain Napoleon Cabigon said.

(Upon arriving at the middle of the curve going to A. Bonifacio, that's where the armored car and the bicycle rider collided.)

The driver said that he did not immediately realize that someone was harmed. He only stopped the vehicle after a gasoline station employee gestured that there was an emergency.

"Hindi ko po napansin siya, eh (I did not notice that he was there)," said the driver, who was stunned to see the victim under the vehicle.

It took almost an hour for the victim to be pulled out from under the armored van, according to a Super Radyo dzBB report by Allan Gatus on Tuesday morning. Quezon City rescue personnel on the scene brought him to the East Avenue Medical Center, the dzBB report added.

The driver of the armored van will be charged with reckless imprudence resulting to homicide, the 24 Oras report said. — Sherylin Untalan/ VDV, GMA Integrated News
