Man caught in dispute accidentally shot, dies

A bystander died after being accidentally shot by a man in dispute with another in San Andres Bukid, Manila.

According to Oscar Oida's report on "24 Oras," the suspect was jealous of his target, a fellow ex-detainee.

In the CCTV footage, it was past 1 a.m. on Thursday when the residents of Barangay 775 heard a gunshot from a man chasing another man in the area.

The target sustained a bullet wound on the back, but another resident was also hit and died.

"Nadamay lang ito, umiinom ito sa kalye at tinamaan nung bala mula doon sa pamamaril ng ating suspek," said Police Captain Dennis Turla, chief of Manila Police District's Homicide Division.

(The man was caught in the dispute, he was in a drinking session, and he got hit by the gunshot from the suspect)

The victim was rushed to the hospital but later died.

A police officer patrolling in the area immediately arrested the suspect.

"Ako'y akmang bubunot din sabi ko pulis ako bitawan mo baril mo, binitawan naman niya," said Police Corporal Raymond Sotto.

(I told him to put his gun down and he did)

GMA Integrated News tried to get a statement from the suspect, but he refused to talk. The family of the deceased victim said they could not accept what happened to their loved one.

"Mabulok po sana siya sa kulungan sana po mabigyan ng hustisya ang tatay ko," said the victim's daughter.

The suspect is facing charges of murder and frustrated murder.

Police said he was just recently released after serving four years in prison.

"Ilang beses na ito labas masok ng kulungan at napag-alaman namin sir na halos isang taon palang siya nakakalaya sa bilibid para sa kasong frustrated murder," said Turla.

(The suspect was in and out of jail.  We found out he was released barely a year ago for frustrated murder)

"Based sa ating investigation selos yung naging dahilan. Sa interview na ginawa sa ating suspek sabi niya ay may relasyon itong kanyang kinakasama at itong biktima," Turla said, which the suspect, however, denied.

(Based on our investigation, jealousy was the cause of the dispute.  The suspect said during our interview that his target has an affair with his partner)

"Hindi po totoo yon na inagaw ko asawa niya, alam ng buong San Andres ng lugar namin, di ko nga kaaway 'yan nagulat ako binaril na lang ako, magkausap pa kami niyan," the victim's target said.

(It's not true that I have an affair with his partner, the people of San Andres know that, I don't consider him an enemy that's why I was surprised when he shot me while we were talking). —Sherylin Untalan/LDF, GMA Integrated News
