Chinese New Year celebration in Binondo peaceful —MPD

The welcoming of the Chinese New Year in Binondo, Manila on Friday was peaceful, the Manila Police District (MPD) said on Saturday.

"Peaceful Over-All. No untoward incident transpired and NO crimes was recorded," the MPD said.

Police monitored the Chinese New Year festivities in Binondo from 5 p.m. Friday to 12 a.m.

Binondo, said to be the oldest Chinatown in the world, had a number of activities on Friday.

Around 5,000 people attended the Lucky Chinatown concert and New Year's countdown, according to the MPD.

An estimated 10,000 trooped to the Binondo-Intramuros Bridge and Jones Bridge to watch the fireworks display, it added.

Meanwhile, around 12,000 people were on Ongpin Street as of 12 a.m., the Manila Police District said.

In all, around 50,000 people were in Binondo to celebrate Chinese New Year, according to the MPD.

Some roads were closed for the occasion.

Malacañang earlier declared February 9, 2024 as an additional special non-working day in the country for the celebration of the Chinese New Year. —KG, GMA Integrated News
