How Benigno Aquino High School passed PISA 2022
Only the Benigno Aquino High School passed the Programme International Student Assessment in 2022 among public schools in the National Capital Region.
How did the public high school do it? The school principal and a math teacher offered a few insights.
“Nagki-create po kami ng mga activities na talagang maiintindihan ng mga estudyante lalo na sa math,” math teacher Mary Rose Lachica said on Marisol Abdurahman's report on "24 Oras."
(We come up with activities in which students would be able to understand concepts, especially in math.)
Principal Lilybeth Sagmaquen said the school's teachers make sure the students learn the competencies expected from them when they're done with their studies.
“Naka-focus kami sa teachers, na sini-siguro namin na naituturo lahat ng competency na needed,” Sagmaquen said.
(We focus on teachers, which would ensure that all necessary competencies are taught)
The Department of Education did not deny that the number of passing schools reflected the quality of education in the country.
While the PISA score from 2018 to 2022 rose, DepEd added that it was still considered low-proficient.
“Halos parehas lang naman ang resulta nung nasa PISA at math namin na medyo low proficient po ang ating mga bata… ’Yung learning outcome natin ay hindi sya at par with the others,” said DEPED Central Office Bureau of Education Assessment Director Nelia Benito.
(Almost all of our results saying that the students are low-proficient in PISA and math are almost the same… Our learning outcome is not at par with the others)
There were also factors, that included the quality of life, that affected the proficiency or quality of education of the students.
“Socio-economic status ng mga bata, parental support and involvement sa kanilang pag aaral, mga provisional resources sa school at saka meron po tayong school environment,” Benito added.

At the moment, DepEd continues to implement the National Recovery Program for both students and teachers.
They are also implementing Digital Education so that younger students may become more proficient in computer usage.
“[The] National Reading Program, National Science and Mathematics program para sa mga teacher, ni-remove na natin ang mga admin task para maka concentrate lang po sila sa teaching,” Benito said.
