Manila cops relieved over shooting of fleeing suspect
Six police officers were temporarily relieved from their posts after a suspect who tried to rob a jeepney managed to flee from them and was only prevented from escaping when shot.
According to Mariz Umali's report on "24 Oras," the incident occurred on Friday, January 12, 2024.
Based on a video clip, a group of police officers surrounded the jeepney after the driver managed to bring his vehicle to a police station.
One of the policemen was armed with a riot shield and positioned himself at the window to poke the suspect, while another policeman was holding a baton. Another policeman was waiting in the front seat of the jeep and pointing a gun at the suspect.
Despite this, the suspect still managed to slip through them. The police then fired shots and wounded the suspect on the leg.
However, the Manila Police said it would still investigate if the responding police officers had failed to follow procedures.
"May mga hindi po nasunod dun sa mga provision ng police operational procedures," said PNP Spokesperson Police Colonel Jean Fajardo.
"The only time na pu-pwede mo pong gamitin ang yung baril para is to protect yourself. Obviously, hindi naman po under threat yung buhay po ng pulis na rumeresponde. There is no imminent threat against doon sa nagpaputok at yung pagpapaputok po niya sa maraming tao ay this might create another problem dahil baka po may tamaan," she added.
The six responding police officers were initially removed from their posts while the investigation continues.
The precinct commander was also asked for an explanation.
The policemen may have to undergo retraining or a refresher course and be reminded of the correct response to such incidents. — Sherylin Untalan/DVM, GMA Integrated News
