More garbage collected in Nazareno 2024 compared to previous years —Manila LGU
More garbage has been collected in this year's celebration of the Feast of the Black Nazarene compared to previous years, Manila government’s Department of Public Services said on Wednesday.
Based on its data, the Department said 158 truckloads of garbage were collected from January 6 to 10.
“The total volume of garbage collected during the celebration of the Feast of the Black Nazarene from January 6 to 10, 2024, has increased significantly as compared with the garbage collected from the past previous years,” it said.
“A total of 158 truckloads and a volume of 468 metric tons was collected for the year 2024,” it added.
The Department said the increase could be attributed to the return of the traditional Traslacion, which was stopped for three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
From 2020 to 2023, the garbage collected during the Black Nazarene celebration was around 43 to 99 truckloads only.
Part of the Black Nazarene celebration, Traslacion is the procession of the 400-year-old black image of Jesus Christ from Quirino Grandstand back to its home in Quiapo Church.
According to Quiapo Church, the estimated crowd during the Traslacion on Tuesday—covering Quirino Grandstand, the procession route, and Quiapo Church—reached 6.5 million.
A total of 453 people were reported injured according to the Department of Health (DOH). The worst condition medical personnel attended to was a suspected heart attack case.
The image left Quirino Grandstand at 4:45 a.m. and arrived at the church at 7:44 p.m.—a journey that took 14 hours, 59 minutes and 10 seconds to finish. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
