Manila archbishop urges voluntary use of face mask, practice hand hygiene
Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula has issued a circular on health and safety protocols for the Christmas season amid reports of COVID-19 cases and respiratory diseases.
"Our communities will once again gather for the traditional Simbang Gabi or Misa de Aguinaldo. Children and young people will visit homes to offer Christmas carols," he said.
The prelate added that parish ministries and organizations will also hold parties and gatherings as part of the Filipino Christmas celebration that is "vibrant, festive, and faith-filled."
Advincula noted that the season will be celebrated amid reported cases of respiratory illnesses.
"We continue to receive reports about incidences of COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses. But we will not allow them to deprive us of our Christmas joy," he said and underscored that the archdiocese will heed the advice of the Ministry on Health Care.
"We request our communities to observe the health and safety protocols. Let us practice voluntary wearing of face masks and hand hygiene. Those who are ill must be reminded to stay at home so as not to spread infection," said Advincula.
The recommendations are part of efforts to curtail the spread of diseases.
Health Secretary Ted Herbosa said Friday that there is a "minimal" increase in COVID-19 cases but the health department is not worried.
Herbosa also said that the DOH would not mandate the wearing of face masks anew, but encouraged people who have symptoms to refrain from going out and attending social gatherings.
Cardinal Advincula encouraged the faithful to heed the implementation of health and safety protocols and "Let these measures be our gesture of charity and compassion for others, especially those who are vulnerable."
“As I wish you a blessed Christmas season, I gladly assure you of my prayerful solicitude,” he said. — BAP, GMA Integrated News
