SUV driver who sideswiped motorcycle rider, passenger arrested —police

The SUV driver who was caught on dashcam video sideswiping a motorcycle rider and his passenger in Mandaluyong City has been arrested, police said Thursday.

In a statement, the Mandaluyong City Police said a complaint of attempted murder has been filed against the suspect.

“Ang nasabing suspek ay kasalukuyang nasa kustodiya ng Mandaluyong Police at ito ay nasampahan na ng kaukulang reklamo,” the police said.

(The suspect is currently under the custody of Mandaluyong Police and a complaint has already been filed against him.)

The victims — the motorcycle driver and his live-in partner — were traversing the EDSA Ortigas-Southbound Lane in Barangay Wack Wack at 7:50 a.m. on Wednesday when the SUV driver sideswiped them.

Based on the police investigation, the SUV driver got furious after the motorcycle rider tried to overtake him.

The victims were brought to the hospital while the suspect was initially put under the custody of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

The Land Transportation Office (LTO), for its part, said it would issue a show cause order to the SUV driver on Thursday.

“Ngayong umaga papadalhan namin ng show cause order iyong driver (This morning, we will send a show cause order to the driver),” LTO chief Vigor Mendoza II said in a radio interview.

“Starting today ‘pag na-serve na ang show cause order, may preventive suspension na siya, hindi na siya puwedeng magmaneho (Starting today, once the show cause order is received, he is already under preventive suspension and is no longer allowed to drive),” he added.

Mendoza said the bank who owns the SUV will also receive a show cause order to determine if the driver is authorized to use the vehicle and how he acquired it.

According to Mendoza, the driver was a 53-year-old farmer. —KBK, GMA Integrated News
