NCRPO SAYS

9 detainees escape Manila jail

Nine persons under police custody escaped from Police Station 1's custodial facility in Tondo, Manila, early on Wednesday, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) said.

According to the police, the jailbreakers escaped the jail facility around 1:30 a.m.

Five of the nine detainees were rearrested during follow-up operations while four others remain at large, according to the Manila Police District (MPD).

Manila Police District (MPD) Police Colonel Arnold Thomas Ibay said the detainees allegedly tore down the steels in the facility, according to a report of Super Radyo dzBB's Manny Vargas.

“Initial investigation revealed that the escapee managed to break the iron grill at the side portion of the jail facility and make good of their escape,” the police report said.

“Extensive manhunt operation are underway for the recapture of remaining escapees,” it added.

Due to this, Ibay said the concerned desk officer and jailer of MDP Station 1 have been relieved from their posts pending results of the investigation into the jailbreak.

The manhunt operations to capture the six remaining jailbreakers are still ongoing. —VAL/RSJ, GMA Integrated News
