AFTER FRIDAY'S SMOG

'Good' air quality logged in parts of Metro Manila

Parts of Metro Manila registered a 'good' air quality Saturday morning, according to the data from the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) through its Continous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring station.

For PM 10 (particles that are small enough to pass through the throat and nose and enter the lungs.)

Good

  • Taguig
  • Parañaque
  • Makati
  • Pateros
  • Caloocan
  • San Juan

Fair

  • Mandaluyong

For PM 2.5 (Particles that are so small that it can reach deeply into the respiratory tract)

Good

  • Caloocan
  • Makati
  • Parañaque
  • Pateros

Air quality in other parts of the Metro was not recorded because it was offline or there was no available monitoring system in that area.

On Friday, classes in Metro Manila were suspended due to "smog formation." It added that there's a possible occurrence of “thermal inversion” where warmer air is held below the cooler air.

The DENR said this suppresses the ability of pollutants to move vertically, causing visibly trapped particulate matters closer to the ground.

The agency clarified that it had nothing to do with Taal's volcanic activity.  —VAL, GMA Integrated News
