Marikina River still on first alarm due to heavy rains from Habagat

Local authorities retained the first alarm at Marikina River on Sunday after heavy rains from the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) enhanced by Typhoon Hanna poured.

At 10 a.m., the water level at the river was at 15.4 meters, the Marikina Public Information Office said in a post on Facebook.

All floodgates were open, it added.

Parts of the Marikina River Park were closed to the public on Sunday, according to a report by Luisito Santos on Super Radyo dzBB.

The first alarm was raised at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday after the water level reached 15 meters.

Under the city's system, the first alarm is raised when the water at Marikina River reaches 15 meters above sea level. It means residents should "prepare".

The second alarm is sounded when the water reaches 16 meters, and this means residents should "evacuate".

Meanwhile, the third alarm is hoisted when the water reaches 18 meters, and this calls for "forced evacuation."

Typhoon Hanna (international name: Haikui) on Sunday morning slightly intensified while moving closer to the coast of southern Taiwan, PAGASA said.

It is enhancing the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) which is expected to bring occasional to monsoon rains over the western portion of Luzon and Antique in the next three days. —KG, GMA Integrated News
