MMDA clarifies it won’t ticket motorbikes in EDSA bike lanes just yet

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Monday clarified that it will not yet issue tickets to motorcycle riders using the exclusive bike lanes on EDSA.

“Yes, Hindi pa po kami naniniket [Yes, we will not issue tickets yet],” MMDA chairperson Romando Artes said in an interview on GMA Integrated News’ Unang Balita.

“Siguro po hangga’t hindi namin naayos yung polisiya regarding kung ano po talaga. We'll consult po sa mga stakeholders,” Artes added.

(Maybe while we still haven't arranged the policy on how we will go about this. We’ll consult our stakeholders.)

However, MMDA enforcers were already out along EDSA on Monday, ready to stop motorbikes using the bike lanes.

Artes said that the MMDA can only recommend but it is the Department of Transportation (DOTr) that will decide on the policy.

On Sunday, the MMDA said it will apprehend motorcycle riders using bicycle lanes on EDSA starting Monday.

"Simula bukas, Agosto 21, huhulihin na ang mga nagmomotor na gagamit ng  bicycle lane sa EDSA. Disregarding traffic sign ang violation na may kaakibat na P1,000 multa," the MMDA said in a statement.

(From tomorrow, August 21, motorcycles using bicycle lanes on EDSA will be apprehended. The violation will be disregarding traffic signs, which has a corresponding P1,000 fine.)

Artes said the MMDA issued the reminder after complaints from bicyclists that the lane designated for them is being used by motorcycle riders. — BM, GMA Integrated News
