Maynilad: Water interruption in parts of Las Pinas, Cavite expected until Nov. 2

Parts of Las Piñas and Cavite may experience water service interruption starting Tuesday, August 8 as Maynilad Water Services repairs one of its treatment plants in Muntinlupa City.

According to Mark Salazar’s Monday report on “24 Oras,” the water service interruption will be implemented from 5 p.m. to 6 a.m. until November 2 to give way for the changing of the ultrafiltration (UF) membranes of the Putatan Water Treatment Plant.

“Kung makakaapekto man ito mayron pong siguro oras lamang sa labas natin. Pero as of now marami na rin tayong napalitan, somehow nahahabol natin ang pangangailangan sa labas,” said Putatan 2 Treatment Plant head Nico Bueno.

(If they will be affected then it will only last for hours. As of now, we can still provide ample supply.)

There are a total of 14 UF membranes in the water treatment facility, of which five were repaired ahead of the expected disruption. Bueno said it is important to repair it before the onset of the amihan season.

“Inaabangan na kasi natin 'yung pagtaas ulit ng paglabo ng Laguna Lake. Wherein we expect it around November-December na mangyayari so kailangan natin tapusin ito. Tinatarget namin matapos ang pagpaplit ng UF membranes by November dapat matapos kami,” he added.

(We’re targeting to change the UF membranes by November.)

Laguna Lake is the only source of freshwater for around 157,000 Maynilad customers in Muntinlupa, Las Piñas, and Cavite. At least 300 million liters of water are needed to supply them.

The water concessionaire uses a three-step method in purifying the water supply including the removal of solid silt in the raw water, filtration of solid wastes, and removal of non-organic metallic substances and viruses using UF.

Bueno said they also use reverse osmosis filtration should there be a need to further ensure the quality of the water.

“Meron naman po tayong ginagawa na minomonitor natin ang quality ng ating tubig sa Laguna Lake consistently kung ano mga pagbabago at anong aksyon namin batay sa pagbabago na yun,” he added.
