Tricycle driver killed in alleged shootout after fleeing checkpoint

A tricycle driver who allegedly raced past a checkpoint and led policemen on a chase was shot and killed in an alleged shootout with the authorities.

According to Marisol Abdurahman's report "24 Oras," the tricycle driver Christian Acebes was hit on the chest and head.

He was brought to the hospital but died.

Investigation showed that Acebes evaded a checkpoint at the Retiro area in Quezon City despite getting flagged down by policemen.

The cops went after him on board their motorcycle until they reached Sampaloc in Manila.

The tricycle driver reportedly shot at the policemen who returned fire.

Police Brig. Gen. Andre Dizon, MPD director, said an investigation is ongoing as regards the exchange of fire.

Acebes is reportedly facing illegal gambling raps.

The police are also determining why Acebes had a gun, which they said was probably the reason he drove past the checkpoint.

Antonio Benosa, the executive officer of Barangay 580, said Acebes was a resident of their community and had no record with the barangay.

Acebes' mother has reportedly refused to comment on the incident. —Jiselle Casucian/NB, GMA Integrated News
