Tanker transporting chemicals for LPG gets stuck underneath QC footbridge

A tanker carrying chemicals used in making liquid petroleum gas or LPG got stuck underneath a footbridge in Quezon City early Saturday morning.

The incident occurred at around 1 a.m. underneath the EDSA-Quezon Avenue footbridge in Quezon City, according to a report by Luisito Santos on Super Radyo dzBB.

According to the driver, he came from Batangas and was on the way to the company garage in Montalban, Rizal.

To avoid the traffic, he used the service road which was underneath the flyover and footbridge, but the oil tanker got stuck, he added.

He said he was not able to calculate precisely the height of the footbridge as he turned from Quezon Avenue going toward Quezon Memorial Circle, according to GMA Integrated News Bulletin.

A signage placed on the footbridge showed that it has vertical clearance of 3.3 meters.

Personnel of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority immediately responded.

The northbound lane of EDSA near Quezon Avenue was temporarily closed as emergency personnel worked to remove the oil tanker from the area.

Pedestrians were also not allowed to use the footbridge after some damage was seen.

The tanker was finally removed from underneath the Quezon Avenue footbridge at 5:54 a.m.. The area was then opened to motorists.

Meanwhile, personnel of the BFP remained in the area to ensure public safety after the smell of chemicals was observed.

Authorities are set to conduct an investigation to determine if the driver of the tanker could be held liable for the incident. — BAP/KG, GMA Integrated News
