MMDA: Installation of motorcycle lane markings along Commonwealth finished by mid-Feb.
The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Wednesday said the installation of motorcycle lane markings along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City will be finished by mid-February.
At the public briefing, MMDA chairperson Romando Artes said they want to complete first the installation of markings and road signages before the implementation of the motorcycle lanes.
"Patuloy po yung pagawa natin ng lane markings at mga road signages. We expect it to finish by mid-February at masisimulan na po natin yung pag-iimplement ng exclusive motorcycle lanes and PUV lanes dito sa Commonwealth,” Artes said.
(We will continue to install the lane markings and road signages. We expect to finish it by mid-February and we will be able to start the implementation of exclusive motorcycle lanes and PUV lanes here in the Commonwealth.)
"We don't want to start it na hindi kumpleto itong mga road signages natin at 'yung lane markings para walang excuse yung mga motorista na mag-violate ng exclusive lanes na mga ito," he added.
(We don't want to start the implementation until the installation of road signages and lane markings are complete so that motorists will have no excuse to violate these exclusive lanes.)
The MMDA earlier said the exclusive motorcycle lanes will reduce road accidents and improve the flow of vehicles.
Artes said they are still studying designating exclusive motorcycle lanes on some major roads in Metro Manila, including EDSA and Roxas Boulevard.
Based on a 2018 MMDA regulation, non-exclusive motorcycle lanes were established in different thoroughfares such as EDSA, Commonwealth, C5, among others.
Clearing ops
Meanwhile, Artes said the MMDA and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) have coordinated to continue road clearing operations along roads in Metro Manila.
“Joint operation po ito ng MMDA at DILG para sa ganoon matapos naming i-clear ang kalsada, itu-turnover namin ito sa barangay at yung barangay kailangan i-accept na malinis na 'yung kalsada at may responsibility siya na i-maintain yung nasabi na malinis na kalsada,” he said.
(This is a joint operation of MMDA and DILG. After we clear the roads, we will turn it over to the barangay officials. The barangays must accept that the road is clean and they have the responsibility to maintain it that way.)
“Kapag hindi niya po iyan namaintain ng mga barangay official, sila ay puwede maharap sa kasong administratibo,” he added.
