Habagat-induced rains flood some Metro Manila roads

Several areas in Metro Manila experienced flooding on Tuesday morning due to rains brought by the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat.

According to Oscar Oida’s report on “24 Oras,” Rizal Avenue corner Remegio Street going to Bambang Street had gutter-deep floods.

Recto Avenue going to Doroteo Jose also had gutter-deep floods.

Gutter-deep floods were also experienced in front of POEA, NIA Road, Araneta Avenue and Quezon Avenue.

Floodwaters quickly subsided after the rains stopped.

“On year-round ang paglilinis po namin ng mga estero at pag-de-declog ng mga drainages. Yung mga pumping stations po natin, 72 na po ang total niyan, ay patuloy natin mine-maintain,” said Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Task Force Special Operations chief Bong Nebrija.

(We clean esteros and declogged drainages year-round. We continue to maintain our 72 pumping stations.)

Meanwhile, the inclement weather prompted several local officials in the National Capital Region to suspend classes.

“Dapat sana maaga pa lang, madaling araw nagabiso na, kawawa. Dadaanan pa namin, sir ay baha,” a mother said.

(Classes should have been suspended earlier. We'll have to make our way through the flood.)

“Okay lang po yun. At least kampante ka na nasa bahay na ang bata. Kasi Grade 1 lang eh. Malayo kami sir,” another mother said.

(That's okay. At least you are sure that the child is at home. Because he’s only in Grade 1. We live far away.)

PAGASA said the Habagat would continue to prevail over parts of the country, causing isolated rain showers and thunderstorms. — DVM, GMA News
