1 dies after 'food poisoning' downed 16 people in Tondo
One of the 16 residents in Barangay 172 in Tondo, Manila who had fallen ill due to a supposed food poisoning has died.
Darlene Cay on Unang Balita identified the fatality as Josefina Manila, 45, a PWD, who was rushed to the hospital much later when she was found frothing alone in her room after eating the chicken mami that the rest of the victims had eaten, including the vendor.
According to the report, eight of the victims were taken to the Tondo Medical Center and were already in stable condition.
Levita Manila, 72, Josefina's mother is likewise in stable condition.
Kenneth Santos, a relative of the victim, said that after eating the chicken mami, Levita became nauseous, and was vomiting and her hands were turning violet when she was taken to the hospital.
CCTV footage shows a child vomiting, then another, and some others passed out, prompting barangay officials to rush all those who suffered food poisoning symptoms to the hospital.
Also, the report said that the chicken mami vendor was taken to the hospital after supposedly eating the food she was selling.
Aner Dela Vega, the vendor's mother, said they had no idea why their customers were poisoned, as they have been serving the same chicken mami in the neighborhood for nearly twenty years.
“Ayon sa kwento ng anak ko, wala naman po siyang ibang halo dahil almost 20 years na po siyang nagtitinda niyan [...] Walang kakaibang ginawa” [We have been selling the same chicken mami recipe for nearly 20 years], Dela Vega said.
Barangay officials said the victims would get financial aid, particularly for the necessary medications, the report added.
Authorities have collected samples of the chicken mami to determine whether it was the cause of the food poisoning. –Alzel Laguardia/LBG, GMA News
