Motorist hits Manila traffic enforcer to escape ticket, settles violation for P4,000
A motorist was caught on CCTV crashing into a traffic enforcer to escape a traffic violation in Manila last June 18.
According to Jun Veneracion’s report on “24 Oras” on Tuesday, a traffic enforcer tried to pull a motorist over for running a red light.
Despite the enforcer's attempts to block the motorist with his motorcycle, the latter just crashed into the motorcycle and kept driving on.
After giving chase for several blocks, the enforcer was finally able to pull the motorist over at the corner of Quirino Avenue and San Marcelino Street.
But instead of issuing a traffic ticket, the enforcer let the motorist leave in exchange for P4,000.
Director of Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau Dennis Viaje summoned the traffic enforcer after finding out about the incident.
“Lagi ninyong ilalagay sa isip ninyo pera lang yan. Masipag ka lang, kikita ka pero yung pagkatao huwag mong ipagbibili,” Viaje said.
(Always keep in mind that it’s just money. Just work hard and you will earn money. But don’t compromise your character.)
The traffic enforcer said he felt sorry for the motorist when he saw that it was an elderly man, so he agreed to take the money.
“Ang sabi kasi ng sa akin, sa sobrang nerbyos niya hindi niya na alam ang gagawin niya,” he said. Humihingi po ako ng paumanhin sa inyo. Alam ko po na may pagkakamali po talaga ako,” said the enforcer.
([The motorist] explained to me that he was so nervous that he didn't know what to do. I apologize for what I did. I know that I did something wrong.)
Viaje, however, pointed out that the motorist was not even given a traffic ticket.
“Baka tanggalin ko pa yan, sa gigil ko. Kasi hindi mo na mahal pagkatao mo,” Viaje added.
(Maybe I’ll have him fired because he has no character.)
The traffic enforcer further expressed his regret: “Aminado po ako sir sa pagkakamali ko talaga. Pumayag din ako na bayaran ng sasakyan hindi ko naisip na ticketan na rin.”
(I admit sir, that I did something wrong. I also agreed to the take the money instead of issuing a ticket.) — Mel Matthew Doctor/DVM, GMA News
