3 killed, 14 injured in Bilibid prison riot

Three inmates were killed while 14 others were wounded in a riot that transpired inside the New Bilibid Prison on Sunday night, Unang Balita reported on Monday.

According to Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) spokesperson Gabriel Chaclag, the riot started past 6 p.m.

"Nagsimula lang daw ito sa kantiyawan at may pumutok na po na improvised shotgun at doon na po nagsimula ang kaguluhan," Chaclag said.

"Kaniya-kaniyang self-defense na ang kanilang ginawa."

(It started with jokes then suddenly an improvised shotgun was fired, and that's when chaos erupted. Everybody was on self-defense mode.)

Jail guards were able to immediately break the fight but it took almost an hour before everything went under control. Seven inmates were held for allegedly instigating the violence.

Seized from the inmates were improvised pistons or "sumpak" and assorted bladed weapons. —KBK, GMA News
