SUV crashes into EDSA barriers; driver says he fell asleep after taking meds
A man who fell asleep while driving an SUV hit several concrete barriers along EDSA-Quezon Avenue Flyover, northbound on Sunday morning.
In Nico Waje’s 24 Oras Weekend report on Sunday, the SUV’s front part was seen destroyed after hitting three busway barriers and a steel fence past 5 a.m.
The driver, Carl Dela Cruz, said that he had taken allergy medicine after drinking with friends at The Fort in Taguig City.
“Sabi ko no-drowse. Tapos after a couple of minutes, hindi ko na maramdaman na nakapikit pala ako. It felt like a couple of seconds pero minutes siguro ‘yon, tumama na ‘ko,” he said.
(When I bought the medicine, I said it should be no-drowse. However, after a couple of minutes, I didn’t notice my eyes were already closed. It felt like a few seconds, but it could’ve been minutes, then I hit the barriers.)
Dela Cruz said that he had to drive for his drunk friend. This friend of his, along with Dela Cruz's wife, sustained wounds after the crash.
The accident brought intense traffic in the area as it took the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) an hour to remove the broken vehicle along EDSA.
Dela Cruz will have to undergo an investigation and pay for the damaged barriers and steel fence. — Giselle Ombay/BM, GMA News
