Filipinos attend Simbang Gabi online, in-person on second year of pandemic

The traditional nine-day  Simbang Gabi started on Thursday in the second year into the pandemic.

Unlike last year, there continue to be online masses but churches have opened their doors to a limited number of church-goers in keeping with government-issued health protocols.

At the Church of the Gesu, Fr. Francis Alvarez, SJ led the celebration that was attended by individuals wearing masks and observing physical distancing.

"What are you searching for? Before Christmas I wish you to delve more into that question," Alvarez said.

"Remember expectation versus reality. No instant solutions. Assembly required. But even if you screw up the instructions, God will take the baby steps with you and accompany you," he added.

More than 2,400 attended the online mass streamed live via the Jesuit Residence - Ateneo de Manila Facebook page.

Manila Archbishop Cardinal Jose Advincula, meanwhile, led the celebration at the Manila Cathedral, that was livestreamed via the Archdiocese of Manila - Office of Communications page.

In his homily, he talked about light and hope as the people prepare for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ on Christmas Day.

"When we face discouragement and confusion let us long for light, for meaning, for hope. May our hearts lift up to behold amidst the darkness the twinkling and colorful Christmas lights," he said.

"The child to be born is the light of the world. He is the dawn from on high that will break upon us to shine on those who dwell on darkness and the shadow of death and to guide our feet into the way of peace," he added. -- BAP, GMA News
