Couple nabbed for taking out almost P3 million in loans using fake IDs

A husband and wife were arrested by the NBI Anti-Fraud division for defrauding banks of almost P3 million while taking advantage of community restrictions that hampered in-person credit investigations.

According to John Consulta's report on "24 Oras", suspects Evergreen Ignacio Quitoles and Joan Quitoles allegedly filed loan applications with multiple banks using false employment certifications and edited ID photos.

The NBI said the couple themselves answered the bank inquiries when credit investigators called the supposed company telephone numbers they gave.

They would then vouch for the good credit standing of the loan applicants, paving the way for their approval.

“These people took advantage of the fact that the banks are not able to go out physically and do credit investigations, kundi puro tawag lang at verification online,” NBI Anti-Fraud Chief Atty. Palmer Mallari said.

Seized during the NBI operation were P400, 000, fake IDs, phones used for the alleged modus, and an unregistered gun.

"Tinatawagan namin ang pansin ng ibang banko na baka nabiktima sila ng gantong klaseng mga tao po, pupwede silang pumunta samin at makapagfile din ng reklamo,” Mallari said.

The two have been charged with estafa, falsification of public documents, violation of anti-alias law, and the illegal possession of firearms. -Jiselle Casucian/NB, GMA News
