San Juan confirms 9-year-old resident infected with Delta variant

San Juan City on Tuesday confirmed two cases of the more transmissible Delta variant in their locality, one of whom was a minor.

On Facebook, City Mayor Francis Zamora bared that the two cases involved a nine-year-old boy and a 25-year-old female worker.

The 25-year-old, who works in a call center in another Metro Manila city, tested positive for the virus on July 1.

"She was asymptomatic and finished her quarantine on July 13," said Zamora.

Meanwhile, the second Delta variant patient experienced fever as his parents were also hit by the coronavirus disease.

The minor's father was a close contact and officemate of the 25-year-old patient infected with the variant.

"The family underwent quarantine at the Kalinga Center starting July 1 and were released on July 15," said Zamora.

The mayor added that the city government was only informed of the sequenced samples of the patients on Monday, almost a week after they completed quarantine.

To prevent further transmissions, the local government will boost contact tracing.

"We are taking all necessary precautions against the spread of the COVID-19 Delta variant," Zamora emphasized.

"All health and safety protocols are being strictly implemented while stringent contact tracing is being conducted to make sure we arrest the spread of the virus."

To date, San Juan City recorded 110 active cases of COVID-19.

San Juan is also one of the cities that completed the first dose of COVID-19 vaccines for 100% of its eligible population.

Quezon City also detected a Delta variant case - a returning Filipino overseas who came from Saudi Arabia.

Currently, the Philippines recorded 119 Delta variant cases, 12 of which remain active. — DVM, GMA News
