Manila Bay dolomite needs to be replenished, says Duterte

The white dolomite at the Manila Bay will have to be replenished "because of the waves," President Rodrigo Duterte has said.

In his last State of the Nation Address, Duterte said the dolomite which makes a portion of the Manila Bay shores look like a white sand beach was only temporary "until we can think of a good alternative."

Duterte was referring to P389 million beach nourishment project by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

"On Manila Bay, iyong ginawa natin na nilagay iyang [buhangin], scattered, nawawala minsan because of the waves," Duterte said.

"We still have to replenish it because we cannot change the nature of our shores. It is not a permanent fixture there, until we can think of a good alternative," he added.

The beach nourishment project was opened to the public back in September 2020 and again this month amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since then, however, the dolomite sand are being eroded by rains which are fixture in our country.  —NB, GMA News
