Closure of Gen. Malvar, Bagong Barrio u-turn slots on EDSA cause heavy traffic

The closure of the u-turn slots on General Malvar Street and Bagong Barrio in Caloocan City caused heavy traffic on a portion of EDSA on Monday.

According to Jun Veneracion’s “24 Oras” report, around 20,000 vehicles use the two u-turn slots daily.

Their closure to give way to the EDSA busway forced thousands of motorists to use the u-turn slot on A. De Jesus Street instead.

The closure resulted in bumper-to-bumper traffic that extended until Balintawak.

“Ngayon, ‘yung gas namin mas lalo pa pong ma-ano sa paghatid namin. Nananawagan kami, maayos naman po ‘tong EDSA. Ang dami pong naaabala,” one rider said.

The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) later opened one more lane, dedicated for those who needed to turn left to A. De Jesus.

Five other u-turn slots are set to be closed.

A total of 13 slots along the country’s busiest highway will be closed for the designated bus lane. —Julia Mari Ornedo/LDF, GMA News
