Man sneaks past rescuers to bring provision for his trapped family in Marikina
While evacuees in Marikina's inundated barangays were rushing to get as far away as possible from Ulysses' floodwaters on Thursday, one man was doing the exact opposite.
In a report by Chino Gaston on GMA News, the man could be seen sneaking past local rescuers and managing to get back into the flooded streets of their neighborhood.
The only thing the man had with him were two water containers tied to his body with a rope.
It turned out that the containers served two purposes - as his floatation device and as storage for the provision he had secured for his family who were still trapped in their home.
The man - who was not identified in the GMA News report - said their residence was not too far away, saying: "Diyan lang naman kami sa bungad [nakatira]."
Earlier in the day, residents of Marikina's Barangay Concepcion Uno used a basin and a tire tube to transport a 10-month-old baby to safety amid the floods.
As seen in a video taken by Gaston, three people slowly waded through chest-deep water while holding an umbrella over the basin to keep the baby from getting wet.
Three others met them on higher ground with ankle-deep flood to fetch the baby.
On Thursday, the Marikina River reached the water level dumped by Typhoon Ondoy in 2009.
Marikina Mayor Marcy Teodoro admitted that authorities were overwhelmed by the situation, as evacuation centers have become packed even as residents in several areas awaited rescue with floods reaching the second floor of houses. -MDM, GMA News
