The iconic giant shoe landmark in Marikina City has been swept away by the flood brought by Typhoon Ulysses in the Marikina River.

A video posted by Julzdudzpirot Nalimo Lachica on Facebook on Thursday showed a glimpse of the giant red shoe hitting a bridge before it completely became damaged.

The water level in Marikina River has reached 21.8 meters as of 9:14 am, breaching the level of Ondoy in 2009.

Marikina City mayor Marcy Teodoro admitted that authorities were overwhelmed by the situation, as evacuation centers have become packed even as residents in several areas awaited rescue with floods reaching the second floor of houses. —Jannielyn Bigtas/MGP, GMA News
