Busted pipe floods road in Sta. Mesa, cuts water supply of residents

A busted water pipe caused flood and rendered Magsaysay Boulevard in Manila impassable for light vehicles on Friday morning, forcing commuters to ride on trucks, pedicabs, and makeshift carts.

According to Mark Makalalad's report on GMA's 24 Oras, Maynilad's main pipe in Sta. Mesa got damaged around 6 a.m. and submerged the road to two feet of water.

It took Maynilad three hours to successfully turn off the water valve. The flood started to subside around 10 a.m.

"Posible po na nagkaroon lang ng pressure surge or baka medyo nag-weaken lang  'yung joints kaya nagkaroon ng breakage," Maynilad corporate communications head Jen Rufo said.

As a result, some customers of the water concessionaire in Manila experienced temporary supply interruption.

Maynilad said it will deploy mobile tankers to supply water in selected areas in Manila, Makati, Paranaque, and Cavite. Schedules will be announced via social media and text messages.

Assessment is ongoing to determine the extent of repair for the busted water pipe. —Dona Magsino/LDF, GMA News
