NO ‘BASAAN’ THIS YEAR

San Juan fiesta celebrations to continue with procession, Mass livestream

Splashing each other with water during the celebration of the feast day of their patron St. John the Baptist has long been a tradition for residents of San Juan City every June 24th.

This year, however, water-splashing of any kind will not be allowed as a safety precaution amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Bam Alegre on his report for “Unang Balita,” Mayor Francis Zamora has issued Executive Order No. 42 which prohibits the traditional splashing of water during this year’s “Wattah Wattah Festival” to prevent the possible spread of the virus due to close proximity on the streets.

Instead, the image of St. John the Baptist will be paraded on the streets along a designated route.

Only 10 people will be allowed to participate and physical distancing will be strictly observed.

A “fiesta” Mass will be held at the St. John the Baptist Parish at 6 p.m., where only 10 people are likewise allowed to join.

Residents who wish to join the celebration may also “attend” the Mass through the livestream. – Margaret Claire Layug/RC, GMA News
