'Good Samaritan' cop hopes working student-delivery driver finishes studies

The "Good Samaritan" police officer who reprimanded a working student- delivery rider along España Boulevard explained on Wednesday his motive on why he gave the latter a $100 assistance rather than issuing a ticket.

"Naawa po ako noong time na 'yun, lalo na sinabi niya na working student siya. 'Pag meron ka i-share mo. Para kapag ang tao naman ang tinulungan mo, umasenso rin, makatulong din siya sa ibang kapwa," said Police Officer 2 Jonjon Nacino in a 24 Oras report by Oscar Oida.

Nacino said he hopes food delivery driver Joshua Basa will finish his studies.

"Iba pa rin po 'pag may degree ka kasi dito sa atin sa Pilipinas, mas hinahangaan 'yung mga taong nakapagtapos," Nacino said.

Basa said he will add the money to his savings to pay for his tuition fee.

"Kay Sir Jon talaga, grabeng saludo po sa nagawa niyang kabutihan, marunong siyang makaintindi sa tao," Basa said.

On May 16, Basa shared the story of his encounter with Nacino on his Facebook account, posting a photo of the money given to him.

Basa said he was driving to pick up a food item in Sta. Mesa, Manila, when he passed by a checkpoint on España.

While lining up with fellow motorcycle riders to be inspected at the checkpoint, he moved to the other queue after seeing another rider do the same.

Nacino approached him and scolded him for cutting in line, which Basa said was not his intention.

To his surprise the officer did not pull out any tickets. Instead the officer handed him $100 and told him, “oh eto, tulong ko sayo.”

The officer insisted the working student accept the money, telling him to finish his schooling.

“Tanggapin mo na. Tulong ko sayo yan, gusto ko magtapos ka ha! Ipangako mo sakin!” the officer told Basa. -- Jamil Santos/BAP, GMA News
