Medical interns from Ateneo produce protective equipment for COVID-19 frontliners

A group of medical interns from the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health decided to make protective equipment for frontliners against the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

The interns were pulled out from their hospital duties due to the threat of the virus.

However, they continued to take part in helping health workers in the field.

“…One way that we found is by making alternative face shields for our frontliners,” the group said in a Facebook post on Saturday.

“We have donated to The Medical City. We’re looking forward to send them more, as well as other partner hospitals of our school such as Ospital ng Makati, Rizal Medical Center, and our partner community health centers in Payatas,” it added.

According to the group, personal protective equipment are essential in the management of patients to prevent getting and spreading diseases like COVID-19.

The group said they started producing the face shields after finding out their partner hospitals were running out of supplies.

“Due to the lack of open stores, we have deviated from it a bit and have tried different materials and styles of making them,” it said.

“The assembly is quite simple and can be easily done at home as long as the materials are available,” it added.

YouScooper Jay Giron Angeles also made some face shields using acetate, foam and double-sided tape.

He was able to produce 70 pieces and donated these to Lipa City District Hospital in Lipa, Batangas on Sunday.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III earlier said there is a global shortage in the supply chain for these equipment due to the growing COVID-19 cases across the globe. —Joviland Rita/KG, GMA News
