Death toll in Tondo construction accident now at 2

The death toll in the Tondo, Manila construction site accident on Sunday was updated to two.

A Balitanghali report by JP Soriano did not identify the second fatality, but earlier reports named the first casulaty as Rey Pazares, a steel man.

Two others were injured in the incident and are currently at Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center.

One of the survivors recalled that he was on the building's third floor when another construction worker brought a bucket of cement to the fourth floor.

"'Yun po bigla pong nabali 'yung bakal po na nakatuntong, bagsakan lahat po," said Efren Bantoto.

"Nalaglag 'yung inapakan nila tapos bumigay 'yung apat na piraso po," said Jerry, one of the construction workers.

"'Yung tinatawag na bangka-bangka...nasa taas, nasa ibabaw, nakatambay sa ibabaw, na hindi yata ginagamit pero may mga bato nandoon sa loob," Barangay 281 chairman Jefferson Lao elaborated.

Lao said that the bucket was resting on some metal, which gave way. "'Yun'yung bumigay. Bumigay deretso pabagsak," he said.

Authorities have reached out to the contractor, who vowed to provide assistance to the victims and insisted that they followed the safety procedures of construction sites.

"Responsibilidad natin 'yun. Kung mayroong mangyari sa mga tao natin, di naman tinatakbuhan 'yan. Di natin pababayaan 'yan," the contractor said.

Representatives from the Department of Labor and Employment - National Capital Region (DOLE - NCR) went to the building to inspect the place, but the security guard did not allow them to enter its premises. — Anna Felicia Bajo/BM, GMA News
