Lawmaker urges 60-kph speed limit on Batasan-San Mateo Road after deadly crash

A congressman has urged the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to impose a 60-kilometer per hour speed limit along the Batasan-San Mateo Road in Quezon City after a deadly accident.

Quezon City 2nd District Representative Winston Castelo said imposing a speed limit and putting more attention for checking road worthiness of vehicles will help prevent such accidents.

Five people died and 14 more were injured after an overloaded truck smashed three vehicles along the Batasan-San Mateo Road last week.

The lawmaker reiterated that road accidents could be prevented through strict implementation of road rules and if concerned agencies "efficiently" do their job.

Castelo, meanwhile, said that he believes the Land Transportation Office (LTO) should be made answerable to the accident.

He said that the LTO was responsible for ensuring road worthiness of vehicles through the Motor Vehicle Inspection System.

He encouraged the LTO to post representatives or deputize law enforcers to monitor vehicles passing though the said road. —Margaret Claire Layug/ALG, GMA News
