Atio's parents arrive at MPD to meet Solano

Parents of freshman law student Horacio Tomas "Atio" Castillo III on Sunday morning went to the Manila Police District (MPD) to face the a suspect in the death of their 22-year-old son.

Radio dzBB Mao dela Cruz reported that Horacio Castillo II and Carminia went directly to the MPD's homicide division office to meet with John Paul Solano and directly ask him on how their son died.

Solano surrendered to Senator Panfilo Lacson on Friday, days after the MPD announced that he was being considered as the principal suspect in the hazing death of Castillo.

Solano was turned over by University of Santo Tomas (UST) Civil Law Dean Nilo Divina to the senator, who brought the suspect to MPD director Chief Superintendent Joel Coronel.

Castillo's parents welcomed Solano's surrender to the authorities, but had said they did not want him to be turned into a state witness.

Solano, previously a "person of interest" in the case, was considered a principal suspect in Castillo's death after discovering that he gave "false statements" to the police.

He said that he found Castillo "half dead" and "unconscious" before bringing him at Chinese General Hospital.

Castillo died after attending the "welcoming rites" of the Aegis Juris fraternity. Authorities had confirmed that he died of a massive heart attack possibly due to the injuries he suffered from hazing.

Solano had admitted that he was a member of the fraternity, but said that he did not participate in the initiation rites for Castillo.

The Senate public order committee has scheduled a 6 p.m. hearing on September 25 on the privilege speech of Senator Miguel Zubiri condemning the death of Castillo. —Marlly Rome Bondoc/ALG, GMA News
