DOF confirms Resorts World attacker a former employee
The Department of Finance on Sunday confirmed that Jessie Javier Carlos — the lone attacker in the Resorts World tragedy — was a former employee who was dismissed due to issues with his Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth.
"The [DOF] has confirmed that Jessie Javier Carlos was a former employee of the DOF who was dismissed from the service in April 2014 on orders of the Office of the Ombudsman," it said in a statement on Sunday.
"He was sued by the DOF's Revenue Integrity Protection Service (RIPS) for failure to disclose truthfully all his assets in his SALN, records show," it added.
DOF's confirmation came after National Capital Region Police Office Director Chief Supt. Oscar D. Albayalde identified Carlos as the attacker and said he was a former DOF employee stationed at the One Stop Shop Tax Credit and Duty Drawback Center.
According to a DOF statement dated November 24, 2014, Carlos "had unexplained wealth and had most likely falsified his SALN"
Data revealed that Carlos had an "incongruent" amount of assets and properties at P9.36 million, compared with his income which would only equal P2.46 million in ten years given his annual salary of P210,480.
In his explanation regarding his unexplained wealth, Carlos claimed to have had P7.54-million worth of liabilities.
"The Ombudsman found the claim dubious, as he failed to present creditors or any supporting documents," the DOF said.
According to the latest available data from the Philippine National Police, the death toll of the shooting incident has risen to 38, while at least 54 others were injured.
