Unattended package triggers bomb scare at Camp Crame; turns out negative

A bomb scare hit the Philippine National Police headquarters in Camp Crame Monday morning after a package was left near one of the gates along Boni Serrano Avenue in Quezon City.

Senior Supt. Edwin Capanzana, chief of staff of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Canine Group, said they received information about the unattended package, which consisted of a backpack, duffel bag, and pail, around 8:50 a.m.

"Sa unang assessment namin nung ininspect namin yung package sa X-ray e may nakita kaming cellphone at parang powerbank so we decided to disrupt the package to be sure that there is no bomb," he said.

"Baka po triggering device yung cellphone so to be sure lang," he added.

The EOD personnel used water disruption and the package turned out negative of any bomb components.

The package contained security guard's uniform, clothes, documents, hanger, food items, power banks, and cellphones.

Capanzana said that based on the closed-circuit television footage on the area, the package was left by someone who just alighted from a passenger jeepney.

They, however, cannot see the face of the person who left the package.

The EOD official said they disrupted the package just to be sure.

"Alam naman po natin ang sitwasyon natin sa Marawi, there's a possibility na may supporters ang ISIS-Maute group na nasa Maynila," he said.

He said they will bring the cellphones to the Anti-Cybercrime Group to check if they can get details on the owner of the package.

"Para malaboratory test natin ang cellphone para madetermine ang may-ari, kung may message doon para din malaman kung ito ay aksidenteng naiwan o iniwan talaga," he said. — Amita Legaspi/RSJ, GMA News
