SECURITY BEEFED UP

Liquor ban imposed around UST on bar exam Sundays

A liquor ban will be implemented around the University of Santo Tomas on the four Sundays of November, the Manila Police District has announced.

The prohibition is in connection with the security measures for the 2016 bar examinations that will be held on Nov. 6, 13, 20 and 27 at the España campus.

MPD Director Senior Superintendent Joel Coronel said the sale, use, or distribution of liquors within 100 meters of examination venue will be prohibited.

“That liquor ban takes effect the night before the bar exams and until the midnight the following day," Coronel said.

"This is to prevent previous occasions where there are members of fraternities, organizations, and other associations who will be drinking along the streets during the exam,” he added.

Manila Mayor Joseph "Erap" Estrada has ordered the MPD to beef up security at the UST ahead of the bar examinations.

“We will utilize all our available law enforcement and protective units to ensure the orderly and peaceful conduct of the (bar) examinations. We can’t let any untoward incidents to happen again,” Estrada said.

Coronel said the MPD would deploy policemen to the whole perimeter of UST, including Espana Avenue, Lacson, Dapitan, and P. Noval.

“We will be deploying round-the-clock patrol and police visibility in the area, especially on the first Sunday where we expect a lot of people will be proceeding to the area,” Coronel said.

The westbound side of Espana Avenue will also be closed to vehicular traffic in the morning and afternoon on November 6, 13, 20, and 27, to give way to examinees.

The security preparations are meant to prevent a repeat of any untoward incident such as the one in September 2010, when 42 persons were injured after a grenade explosion outside De La Salle University on Taft Avenue.

Two law graduates had their legs amputated because of the incident.

The bar examinations have since been moved from DLSU to UST. —Rie Takumi/NB, GMA News
