Firemen in NCR undergo surprise drug test

The Bureau of Fire Protection-National Capital Region (BFP-NCR) conducted a surprise drug test during a command conference in Quezon City.

In a statement on Saturday, BFP-NCR noted that it subjected its firefighters to a surprise drug test "in support of President Rodrigo Duterte's call to curb the us of illegal drugs among uniformed personnel."

"BFP-NCR has no place for personnel who are involved in illegal drugs. If anyone is found positive for drugs, they may face summary dismissal proceedings and will be booted out from the service," said BFP-NCR Director CSupt. Leonard Banago.

A total of 81 personnel took the surprise drug test during the 1st Semester Command Conference meeting held at Icon Hotel, Timog Ave., Quezon City, Banago noted in a report to Interior Secretary Ismael D. Sueno.

Among those who underwent drug testing are the city and district fire marshals, the District Fire Safety Enforcement Section chief, and regional directorial staff, Sueno added.

The BFP-NCR chief emphasized that the conduct of random and mandatory drug testing of its 3,200 employees will continue as part of the campaign against illegal drugs in Metro Manila.

"City and district fire marshals must be a good example or model of their staff in serving their constituents," Banago said. — John Ted Cordero/VVP, GMA News
