MAKATI MAYORALTY RACE

Kid Peña files electoral protest vs. Abby Binay

Former Makati Mayor Kid Peña on Friday filed an electoral complaint against the newly proclaimed mayor of the city, Abby Binay, for alleged vote buying and fraud.

Peña filed the complaint before the Commission on Elections and petitioned for a manual recount of votes.

Peña believes that a manual recount of the ballots would prove that he won the race.

His supporters earlier staged a rally in front of Makati City Hall to demand a recounting of votes

Peña claimed that in recent history, Binay's lead over him during the May 9 polls, around 17,000 votes has been the smallest.

According to Peña, his camp has enough evidence on vote buying and fraud.

He cited incidents where the Vote Counting Machines allegedly did not reflect votes cast for him.

“May mga cases kami, may mga salaysay kami na may electoral fraud, may massive vote buying, may mga nagsasabing naharass sila during elections. Mayroon rin naitaboy sila, natakot,” Peña said in an interview.

Binay is the daughter of Vice President Jejomar Binay, longtime mayor of Makati and sister of Jun Jun Binay, also a former mayor of the city.

A Binay family member has always held the mayoral post in Makati for 29 years, from 1986 to 2015.

The family lost control of the city in July last year after Jun Jun was dismissed as mayor over graft charges. Peña was the one who took over the post from Jun Jun. —Kiersnerr Gerwin Tacadena/ VVP, GMA News
