Killer of Cherry Pie Picaches mom gets 20 to 40 years jail term

The man accused of killing actress Cherry Pie Picache's mother has been sentenced to reclusion perpetua or a prison term of 20 years and 1 day to 40 years.

Judge Alphonso Ruiz II of Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 216 declared the suspect Michael Flores guilty of robbery with homicide on Thursday, December 10.

Aside from imprisonment of up to 40 years, the court also ordered Flores to pay P50,000 for civil indemnity, P50,000 for moral damages, and P1,245, 615 for actual damages, according to a report by “News To Go.”

According to Picache and her brother Erwin Herrera, who were seen wearing orange shirts in memory of their mother, the decision of the court will serve as an early Christmas gift to their family.

Flores, who is now under the custody of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, will be imprisoned in the New Bilibid Prison.

Picache's mother, Zenaida Sison, 75, was found stabbed to death inside her house in Quezon City on Sept. 19, 2014.

Flores, the main suspect in the killing, was scheduled for sentencing on this day, 10 December 2015, more than a year after the murder.

He earlier pleaded guilty during his arraignment on Oct. 23 last year.  Flores was arrested Oct. 7, 2014 in Laguna. — with a report from Bianca Rose Dabu/LBG, GMA News
