NCR observes #MMShakeDrill

(Updated 3:00 p.m.) In anticipation of The Big One, the National Capital Region conducted an earthquake drill on Thursday morning, participated in by students, office workers, volunteers, government officials and employees.

A 30-second recorded message and the sound of sirens signaled the start of the drill, a sign for everyone to observe the DROP, COVER, and HOLD procedure for 45 seconds.

Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin and Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas observed the procedure at the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council office in Quezon City.

In the event of a big earthquake, heads of government agencies are to gather at Camp Aguinaldo, GMA News reporter Sandra Aguinaldo reported.

Evacuation and rescue operations were in the four quadrants identified by the Metro Manila Development Authority.

Aftermath, glitches

As of noontime, the authorities were still collating reports and assessing the overall success of the activity.

However, some initial observers criticized the apparent lack of a sense of urgency among participants—some of whom were reportedly even stopping to take selfies during the evacuation drill.

Also as of noon, the Philippine Coast Guard's water evacuation drill hit an apparent snag, with the "victims" still stranded more than 30 minutes after the "quake." It was not yet clear as of posting time what went wrong with the drill.

Nevertheless, both MMDA chairman Francisco Tolentino and PHIVOLCS director Renato Solidum praised the overall success of the event.

"This is not just a drill fulfilled. This is a dream fulfilled," Tolentino said.

"(Let us remember that) the aim of this drill is to convert awareness to preparedness when a strong quake hits Metro Manila," Solidum added.

Tolentino and Solidum told reporters that they hope the #MMShakeDrill could be come a regular annual event, to help make safety and evacuation procedures become second nature to the public.

Nighttime drill

Although the main drill is already done with, the #MMShakeDrill is still far from over. Apart from authorities working to collate a comprehensive assessment of the activity, individual institutions have been allowed to conduct their own post-event activities.

In the Ortigas Business District in Pasig City, for example, a separate nighttime earthquake drill has been scheduled for later in the evening, at 8 p.m. —KG/TJD, GMA News
