Residents in Bgy. North Bay, Navotas brace themselves for demolition of their homes

(Updated 4:39 p.m.) Some residents along Road 10 in Barangay North Bay NBBN in Navotas City on Monday gathered early to oppose the scheduled demolition of their shanties at 8 a.m.

About 1,000 houses are set to be demolished to give way to a road widening project of the Department of Public Works and Highways.

Around noon, demolition teams backed by police and personnel from the Bureau of Fire started tearing down houses located between Lapu Lapu Street and Old Fishport Street whose residents availed of the relocation offered by the National Housing Authority.

These residents voluntarily packed up their belongings and waited for the truck that will bring them to the relocation site they were given in Pandi, Bulacan.

They admitted that they will have a hard time adjusting especially as jobs may be hard to find near the relocation site.

However, they were willing to leave their homes in Navotas to avoid possibly being caught in a confrontation between the police and other residents protesting the demolition.

Those opposing the demolition, located beyond Fisherport Street, meanwhile, said the relocation site is far from their work places and the schools of their children.

They formed a human chain, making the road going toward Navotas impassable.

According to them, the relocation site in Pandi, Bulacan is too far from the schools of their children and far from their livelihood.

Majority of the residents said they work at the fishport and in case they will be relocated, they will have to spend more on transportation which will greatly affect their daily income.

But they clarified that they are not totally against vacating R10, only that they prefer a relocation site not far from their workplace. — Athena Imperial and Jay Sabale/KG/RSJ, GMA News
