UP Diliman academic oval closed starting 4 p.m. Dec. 15 for Lantern Parade

The University of the Philippines Diliman campus' Academic Oval will be closed from 4 p.m. to midnight Monday for the yearly Lantern Parade.

UP Diliman vice chancellor for community affairs Nestor Castro said part of University Avenue from E. Jacinto to Quezon Hall will also be closed at this time.

"Mangyaring dumaan sa alternatibong ruta," he said in a memorandum.

Also, Castro said part of the proceeds of the prizes will go to victims of Typhoon Ruby (Hagupit), which left at least 18 dead.

He said the UP Diliman community will hold the traditional Lantern Parade starting 6 p.m. to usher in the Christmas season.

Castro said the slightly late schedule is meant to accommodate those still taking their exams.

The parade will go around the Academic Oval, though it will not stop in front of Palma Hall and Melchor Hall.

He added the program at the Amphitheater will be shortened so participants need not go home very late.

At 7 p.m., an after-parade party will be held at Sunken Garden.

No New Year activities

But Castro said the Tiangge sa Diliman and Countdown to 2015 will not push through on Dec. 31. —Joel Locsin/KG, GMA News
