Lola doesn’t know how to count, sells donuts anyway

Old, but definitely not fragile, 85-year-old Diling Cerballos continues to sell her wares around the University of the Philippines in Diliman to provide for her family, including some granchildren.

"Magkano ang sukli. Hindi ako marunong magsukli," she tells buyers of the donuts that she sells around the campus.

Not being able to read, write and do simple math, people tell Lola Diling that she might be cheated of her profits.

Instead of being dismayed, Lola Diling told GMA News of her firm belief in the goodwill of others.

Proving her right are her frequent customers, students of the university who said that her method of allowing her customers count their own change motivates them to do the right thing.

"Napagkaitan na nga siya- bakit mo siya pagkakaitan pa lalo?" a student said.

"Para dun sa livelihood naman din nila yun, so okay na rin na ibigay yung tama kesa dayain mo pa sila," another added.

Lola Diling insisted that as long as her body was able, she would work to give her grandchildren a good life. —Rie Takumi/NB, GMA News
