1 killed in 3 predawn fires in Manila, Marikina


(Updated 9:49 a.m.) At least one person was killed while several families were rendered homeless after three predawn fires hit residential areas in Manila and Marikina City on Saturday.

In Manila, a fire believed caused by a candle left unattended at a wake destroyed houses in three barangays in the Parola Compound in Tondo, radio dzBB's Roland Bola reported.

The fire started at 1:23 a.m. and spread quickly as the houses were made of light materials and bunched tightly together.

A report by dzBB's Mao dela Cruz said one person was killed in the fire.


The fire reached the general alarm as of 1:53 a.m., GMA News' Vonne Aquino tweeted.

In a later tweet, GMA News' Aquino said at least 2,500 families may have lost their homes in the Parola fire, which was put out at 7:47 a.m. 


It was placed under control as of 4 a.m. Arson investigators are still determining how many houses were razed in the fire.

30 houses razed in Del Pan

Also in Manila, a fire of undetermined origin razed 30 houses in Del Pan in Binondo, rendering at least 60 families homeless.

The fire started at 12:07 a.m. and reached the fourth alarm at 12:13 a.m.

Many of the firefighters battling this blaze were diverted to fight another fire in Parola Compound.

Marikina fire

In Marikina City, at least 10 houses were destroyed in Barangay Santa Elena, dzBB's James Agustin reported.
