Exploding fire extinguisher damages cars, shatters nearby windows in QC

Tension marred a neighborhood in Quezon City Thursday afternoon after a fire extinguisher exploded and damaged nearby cars and windows.

No one was initially reported injured in the explosion at a refilling station for medical and industrial tanks in Anonas, GMA News' JP Soriano reported on "24 Oras."

Investigation showed the exploding carbon dioxide fire extinguisher is the kind recommended by the Bureau of Fire Protection for industrial refilling stations.

"Ang weather condition kanina kasi napakainit, naka-expose sa araw. Dapat pumutok muna sa fuse, hindi cylinder," station owner Carlos Reyes said.

Investigator PO3 Rodolfo Ramos Jr. said they will get the side of the company tasked to refill the fire extinguisher.

"Pupuntahan namin ang nag-refill tapos tatanungin namin bakit sumabog ang refill nila," he said.

For his part, Quezon City fire marshal Superintendent Jesus Fernandez said such fire extinguishers should undergo maintenance yearly. — Joel Locsin/JDS, GMA News
