Manila police chief removes Sampaloc station commander from post
The station commander of the Manila Police District in Sampaloc was relieved from his post Tuesday in the wake of a P1-million extortion attempt on a Filipino-Canadian balikbayan earlier this month.
MPD Chief Superintendent Alex Gutierrez also ordered the his district's Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team to track down 10 members of the MPD Station 4 who were linked to the mess, radio dzBB's Carlo Mateo reported.
Relieved from his post was Police Station 4 (Sampaloc) commander Superintendent Rolando Balasabas. Balabas and 10 of his personnel are under investigation for the alleged extortion try on Filipino-Canadian Belinda Placido.
While Balasabas reported to Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim and denied knowledge of the extortion attempt, most of the accused have yet to surface as of Tuesday.
Tuesday morning, a separate dzBB report said one of the accused, PO1 Joseph Vistan, showed up at the MPD General Assignments Section to clear his name.
Aside from Balasabas and Vistan, Lim had ordered investigated the following police personnel:
- SPO3 Sonny Nosidal
- SPO1 Renato Gregorio
- PO3 Mike Pornilos
- PO2 Josefino Callora
- PO2 Rolando Ladres
- PO2 Dennis Tabliso
- PO2 Laurence Sagum
- PO1 Journey Joy Asayo
A report on "24 Oras" had said Nosidal is assigned to the Philippine National Police's Police Security and Protection Group (PSPG).
Initial investigation showed the suspects went to the victim's house in Zambales at 4 a.m. last Sept. 12 and told her to go with them to Manila.
While the victim questioned their lack of an arrest warrant, they allegedly told her to go along to avoid further trouble.
At the MPD Station 4, they allegedly detained her and told her she had been linked to a stabbing incident, and had to pay P1 million to settle the case. — ELR, GMA News
